REAL EDUCATION SCENARIO

Education Scenario:
After my SLC examination, I had a dilemma of where and what to study like many others who had appeared for the tenth board that year. After the results were announced, I joined an A-level course to further my education. I was delighted and proud to be admitted to the programme, something that not every student gets a chance to do. But as time passed my happiness faded as I realised how difficult it was to cope with the level of the British education taught there after coming from an upbringing in Nepali schools. In contrast to my previous schooling, my A-level courses emphasised a more practical, hands-on method of learning rather than the rote learning I was used to.

Judging by my difficulties as well as the large group of A-level students who I saw waiting for the tutor in my institute every day to get help in order to pass, it isn’t unfair to say that the Nepali education system is sub-standard. Not only does our education not stand out, but also the products of the Nepali education system—us students—are not able to fulfil the duties required of us outside Nepal. In Nepal, a student’s level of knowledge seems to be limited to paper.

Cheating and copying from the guide book on exams has been the way for a large number of students to secure par scores on the SLC; in some cases, their scores are even higher. But what is the point of studying if we are not gaining knowledge. And it is not just students that participate in this practice. Adults—parents, principals, proctors—are also involved. Some say that the higher the number of students passing exams, the more willing donors are to hand over additional funding.  Though this may be a rumour, it is not something unbelievable. Whatever the reason for the depleting quality of Nepali education and the lack of focus on gaining knowledge instead of marks, it’s not good for Nepal. Especially for those honest students who work hard to secure good marks rather than just seeking the prized certificate.

The government should focus on providing an equal quality of knowledge to every child of Nepal—not allowing only those with more money to gain a decent education. Unfortunately, this is not the case; in some parts of the country, there is a dearth of teachers and in some places there are not even books for young students to study with. Rather than targeting an increase in the quantity (i.e. the percentage of students passing), the government and development agencies should focus on the quality of the education being provided. And if every student receives quality education, it is certain that the pass rate will also rise

PRE MONSOON IN NEPAL

                                                                   THE PRE MONSOON:
Earlier, than expected, the umbrellas and raincoats sales in the Nepalese market got on the rise; my relatives living in the valley had some relief on the water problem for a certain period of time; my family and friends back in Biratnagar, one of the hot place of Nepal, really enjoyed the cool climate for a week and most Nepalese people might have got confused about whether they were really in Nepal or not, or at least I did, since there was no load shedding for some limited days. And the cause of all these things is the same i.e. the pre-monsoon rainfall.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 About seven degrees rise in the maximum temperature in last six days in Kathmandu valley have been observed and also the increment of temperature in other parts of the country have been recorded as a result there has been difficulty for maximum people even while sleeping at night due to high temperature and also due to the problem of mosquitoes bite. Similarly, diseases like diarrhea and others have been seen in some people in city area like Kathmandu due to the unusual season fluctuation. And again the cause for these is the same that benefitted the same people at times and again now hampering the same people, a dual agent, i.e. after effect of so called “the pre-monsoon rainfall”.                                                                                                                                                                                    The Pre monsoon rainfall has been a talk of the town at the moment because of its unusual character observed this year. When I was travelling by a tempo last week, one old grandfather sitting side by me was really upset about the climate change and was also concerned about its consequences. He was worried if this continues like it is, than farmers of Nepal won’t able to produce adequate amount of food since the chance of rain in the time of cultivation could minimize and the appropriate amount of food grains cannot be produced. So, is it really the cause of global warming, the inevitable phenomenon, according to some people or is it the global warming, the human cause, according to some other people. Whatever, the effect of it is seen on everything, moveable or immovable including humans?                     Who is the real cause of this then? The rich/developed countries would be the simplest correct of answer to give. Since their activities have been more environmental unfriendly. For instance: they are busy on performing nuclear plants, scientific experiments and busy on expanding Industrialization. And in this way they have been the major contributors for carbon emissions which is the major contributor for the global warming, today. Hence, its impact has hit more on the poor/underdeveloped nation like Nepal which is also under geographical risk. For instance: the Himalayan range mountains have started to melt at higher rate than before since the temperature of the world has been rising on the scale and last year it reached at its high after 35 years. It’s not only the Himalaya getting affected, creatures like birds, animals, insects and immovable things like trees, herbs, shrubs they have also been affected. Ultimately, people and whole ecosystem is being affected. Therefore, it’s all Nepal along with other hardships nation getting unnatural due to the warming. Save People, Save Himalayas, Save Ecosystem. Rich nations let us eat enough and then “please do not disturb” for sound sleep!                                                                Name: SUDESH THAPA

CRISIS CRIES

CRISIS CRIES:                                                                                     Last Friday, I woke up around 8:00 and as a part of a routine, I hurried to the rest room. As I finished my liability in bathroom I opened the tap for water but sadly I was lead to a disappointment. Then, I tried to make a call from the toilet to my room-mate perceiving that he would help me to draw some water by switching the motor ON. But the Nepali network as usual showed its originality; hence I had to make a shout to my friend for the help.  And, despite of his assist, my mission on fetching water still failed, it was load shedding at the same time which frustrated me.                                                                                                                                                                                             This was just the beginning of the extraordinary day. Well, I hook and crook managed some water and finished my bathroom duty. Then I decided to move to the dining hall for my lunch and this time the lunch was different from the normal menu. It was not the “pulaou or any special dish” rather it was “the khichaddi”, mixture of rice, dhal   and vegetable for which I had to substance with. When I asked my warden about this, he said due to lack of gases in the market hostel department was forced to make khichaddi. Well, I had examination that day, so I moved for my destination. Shockingly, it was the day of Nepal Banda, so, I came back to the hostel and requested one of the brothers to take me to the center but again he replied that he could not assist me because, because of the lack of petrol in the market, his bike was out of fuel. Hence, I decided to use my own number eleven vehicles i.e. two legs to move to the center.                                                                                                 This story of mine is just a representative story of what Nepalese people have been getting through most of the time in a year. Well, despite of the so called crisis, we Nepalese people do have resilience that has always helped us to survive in the worst of condition imagined. Sixteen hours of load shedding per day, dry water tap for more than 160 hours a week, no adequate supply of petroleum products in the market and no network coverage signifies how much of toughness do the old faces  in so called “New Nepal” possess.                                                                                                                                    Getting deep into the problem of Nepal, the rural areas people do acquire the difficulty faced by the normal Nepali living in a city. Moreover, the rural side people are also deprive of appropriate diet, proper health facilities, fine education, good sanitation and also the facilities of proper roadways. And if anyone is thinking that the rich people in Nepal are safe from the calamity zone than the question arise that are they really able to breathe fresh in the polluted city. Well, the answer is no and this really shows that every kind of people have been suffering from crisis here in Nepal, no matter of what level they are and what intensity it is.                                                                                                                                                                                  Blame game in Nepal has really lead Nepal into the worst of the condition that was never thought of because nobody is ready to accept the mistakes here. Blaming politicians is just the best way chosen by the citizens to show that they are not the cause for the current situation of Nepal. So, as single drop of water helps to form the ocean, every Nepali should give the best from their side also being loyal towards the state which will help to stabilize the political scenario of the country which then can help to reduce the crisis in the country. Well, I wish no one to suffer from the crisis like I beard in the five by ten (5 by 10) feet of rest room. So, its 1,47,181 square kilometer area where crisis has hit. Oh! Sorry India have captured some part so thanks India, its less than that!. Moreover, getting over the Constitution’s crisis is the most to get rid of other sort of predicament in the nation. Let everyone breathe fresh or should we really wait till May 28!                                                                                Text: Sudesh Thapa

Richie and Sudhama

Richie and Sudhama:                                                                                                                                                                                      Human categorization at maximum times gives the outcome in two ways. For instance: good and bad, black and white, male and female and more. Hence, I at the very moment have categorized people of the earth as Sudhama and Richie.                                                                                                                                    Richie and Sudhama, the character of comics and holy book Mahabharata respectively shares the similarity of just being character within the books. Unlike this, they have differences like existing in different place and time and inclining towards the topic Richie by its name is generous and Sudhama in his character, a poor guy.                                                                                                                                                                    Of course, Richie and Sudhama are the character of different times and places but in contrary to that these days the bike has taken a reverse gear and we see both types of people at this place at the same time. For example: Carlos Slim and his precedents listed in the billionaires list by Forbes magazine are today’s Richie and in the next part of the world, the poor who are runaway from the basic needs like food, shelter and clothing, especially in the country like Somalia, Ethiopia, and also in some parts of Nepal are the today’s Sudhama.                                                                                                                                                                               As a comic character Richie is shown wealthier after every episode. Similarly, supportive to this, the data shown by Forbes every year also shows that today’s Richie are getting richer every day. In contrast to Richie’s scenario, I used to see Sudhama getting poor in the episodes of Mahabharata. And talking about the poor of the earth, they have also the same condition of going poorer, as was Sudhama in Mahabharata. Hence, a literal conclusion of poor getting poorer and rich earning more ratifying the truth money attracts money.                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Where are the people suffering with hardships found? Yes, South Asia, one of the main region where we find the poor ones. It is the same region where the character Sudhama lived in the times of Mahabharata. And in opposite part of the world i.e. in U.S., people with a lot of wealth are found and in the context it’s the same place where Richie Rich, a fictional cartoon was performed.  So, a coincident of finding same type of people in the region as the characters mentioned.                                                                                                                                                                   But despite observing the poor ones in the country, our government has not generated any idea to uplift them. It is the time that our government should sanctify the poor people as Sudhama was blessed by Lord Krishna to uplift him in Mahabharata. Not only Nepal whole world should focus to get rid of poverty. Otherwise the predicted third world war due to gap of poor and rich is at the doors. So, Sudhama, the character of the war times and Richie, the fictional one, who were the different times and place humans may turn out to be the cause of the predicted war at the present time. So am I the cause for the war since I categorized the people as Richie and Sudhama!
